{"id":34485,"date":"2025-05-26T05:56:16","date_gmt":"2025-05-26T09:56:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/?post_type=announcements&#038;p=34485"},"modified":"2025-05-26T05:56:16","modified_gmt":"2025-05-26T09:56:16","slug":"maple-report-over-half-of-canadian-women-say-the-health-care-system-fails-to-meet-their-needs","status":"publish","type":"announcements","link":"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/newsroom\/announcements\/maple-report-over-half-of-canadian-women-say-the-health-care-system-fails-to-meet-their-needs\/","title":{"rendered":"Maple Report: Over Half of Canadian Women Say the Health Care System Fails to Meet Their Needs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>A national survey of over 1,500 women reveals care delays, misdiagnoses and dismissed concerns are widespread, signaling broader system strain and the need for earlier, more proactive care.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Toronto, ON | May 26, 2025 \u2013 A new report from Maple, Canada\u2019s leading virtual care platform, reveals today that 54 percent of Canadian women say the health system does not meet their needs, highlighting how outdated models of care are failing to support the way they seek care today.<\/p>\n<p>Based on a national survey of 1,505 Canadian women conducted by Maple among members of the Angus Reid Forum, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/resources\/womens-health-report\/\"><em><strong>Closing the care gap: the state of women\u2019s health care in Canada<\/strong><\/em><\/a> reveals a system under sustained pressure and its impact on more than half our population <a id=\"cite-ref-1\" href=\"#cite-note-1\">[1]<\/a>. Long wait times, delayed diagnoses and the dismissal of women\u2019s concerns aren\u2019t isolated issues; they\u2019re embedded in how care is accessed. Designed for a different era, Canada\u2019s health system has fallen out of step with today\u2019s challenges in access, continuity and responsiveness.<\/p>\n<p>The findings centre on women\u2019s experiences, but the implications reach well beyond individual patients or any single demographic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough our latest report, we\u2019re seeing the consequences on women of a system that isn\u2019t built for the realities of how people live today,\u201d said Dr. Brett Belchetz, CEO and co-founder of Maple. \u201cDelays, misdiagnoses and the inability to access timely care \u2013 these aren\u2019t edge cases. They point to structural gaps that can\u2019t be solved with small incremental changes. The care model itself has to evolve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key findings from the report include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>62 percent of women have delayed or skipped care due to long wait times.<\/li>\n<li>76 percent believe the system is not designed with their needs in mind.<\/li>\n<li>74 percent feel their health concerns are not taken seriously.<\/li>\n<li>43 percent have experienced delays in receiving appropriate treatment.<\/li>\n<li>35 percent report misdiagnoses or delayed diagnoses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These numbers reflect pressure points that cause ripple effects across families, workplaces and the economy. This is particularly true for those in the sandwich generation, supporting both aging parents and children, who face compounded barriers in a system not structured to provide timely care. In fact, 93% of sandwich generation caregivers report that their dual responsibilities have negatively impacted their own health <a id=\"cite-ref-2\" href=\"#cite-note-2\">[2]<\/a>. Thirty-one percent say caregiving has led them to delay seeking care for themselves, highlighting a critical gap in a system that fails to reflect today\u2019s realities.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, there is growing openness to change. Thirty-one percent of women surveyed have already accessed virtual care, and more than half of those who haven\u2019t say they would be willing to. Tools such as virtual consultations, remote monitoring and proactive care models are already improving access \u2014 enabling faster, more continuous engagement across the health system. Many now rely on workplace benefits to fill the gap, making employers an increasingly vital point of access.\u201cWe won\u2019t fix women\u2019s healthcare by working around the edges,\u201d said Dr. Belchetz. \u201cWe need a system that starts earlier, moves faster and delivers care with empathy, agency and trust. That\u2019s what we\u2019re building here at Maple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Closing the care gap: the state of women\u2019s health care in Canada<\/em> builds on Maple\u2019s 2024 report, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/resources\/proactive-care-report\/\">Health on Hold: the state of proactive care in Canada<\/a><\/em>, which found that 81 percent of Canadians face barriers to accessing early and proactive care. The survey was conducted in English and French.
