Forty-five percent of Canadians<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.statcan.gc.ca\/en\/about\/smr09\/smr09_142\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> live with a preventable disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and following health recommendations <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/04\/09\/harvard-study-says-these-5-habits-may-help-you-live-10-years-longer.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could extend their lives by up to 10 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this blog, we outline the appointments and screening tests you need to take control of your health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Doctor appointments women should make annually, no matter their age<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Primary care providers<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting around age 18, it\u2019s time to switch from a pediatrician to a family doctor or general practitioner. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/blog\/what-is-a-family-doctor\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family doctor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helps you maintain good health by providing physical exams to collect information about your health, check vital signs, and track your health trends over time. Your doctor will let you know when they want to see you again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>Preventive health and screening for women<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is recommended that healthy adult females are screened for:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Blood pressure<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke and should be checked regularly by a healthcare provider. This screening is particularly important for women since <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3255225\/#:~:text=In%202007%2F08%2C%20about%206%20million%20(23.0%25)%20Canadian,CI%2021.7%25%E2%80%9321.8%25).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Canadian women than men are diagnosed with high blood pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Cholesterol<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cholesterol is a fat found in the blood that can form fatty deposits on your artery walls and block blood flow. The Canadian Cardiovascular Society recommends a cholesterol screening to anyone 40 or older, or younger for those with risk factors for heart disease. Early detection of modifiable risk factors can significantly reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or other cardiovascular disease by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pwc.ottawaheart.ca\/education\/heart-health-education\/general-information\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up to 80 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Diabetes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/publications\/diseases-conditions\/framework-diabetes-canada.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Canadians are living with diabetes. Diabetes is when your body cannot produce insulin or it cannot properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone your pancreas produces; it regulates how much glucose (sugar) is in your blood. Diabetes Canada recommends getting tested with either a fasting glucose and\/or a hemoglobin A1C blood test every three years starting at age 40. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This should be done sooner if you\u2019re at a high risk \u2014 meaning, you\u2019re overweight or prediabetic, have a close relative with diabetes, have high blood pressure, or have a history of heart disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Osteoporosis<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/osteoporosis.ca\/facts-and-stats\/#:~:text=Over%202.3%20million%20Canadians%20are,50%2B%20are%20caused%20by%20osteoporosis.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.3 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Canadians live with osteoporosis, a reduction in bone mass. It\u2019s a disease that\u2019s significantly more common in women than men. Your healthcare provider may recommend a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/treatment-tests-and-therapies\/bone-density-test\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bone density test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (an X-ray that measures the strength and density of your bones) if you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthlinkbc.ca\/illnesses-conditions\/arthritis-and-osteoporosis\/osteoporosis-screening\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a broken bone from a minor injury, have a condition that causes bone thinning (like hyperthyroidism and rheumatoid arthritis), have a family history of the condition or if you smoke or get limited exercise. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Osteoporosis Canada recommends all women age 65 and older have regular bone density tests to check for osteoporosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If sexually active you should be screened regularly for c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmaj.ca\/content\/195\/24\/E844\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hlamydia and gonorrhea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because most often these infections have no symptoms at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Vision<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appointments with an optometrist are important not only because they can ensure you\u2019re seeing clearly (or write a prescription to make that happen), but they can also help prevent certain eye conditions. Adults between 20 and 64 should have an eye exam every two years, but those with diabetes should have one every year. After age 65, you should have an eye exam every year since you\u2019re more at risk of getting weakened vision and having an eye condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Hearing<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hearing loss is the reduced ability to hear sounds, whether gradually or suddenly. It can occur at any age, and it has many causes. Contact your healthcare provider for a test if you\u2019re experiencing any issues such as an inability to hear whispers, hear with one ear, or listen at high decibel levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Routine dental care<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dental health experts recommend teeth cleaning once or twice a year, depending on how well you care for your teeth and gums if you have dental problems and how fast tartar builds up on your teeth. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just be sure to visit your dentist at least once a year \u2014 they can help with proactive dental care, treating issues before they worsen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Cancer screening for females<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Skin cancer<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many skin woes \u2014 like acne, psoriasis, or unwanted wrinkles \u2014 that might prompt you to book an appointment with your dermatologist. With the increasing strength of UV rays and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dermatology.ca\/public-patients\/skin\/melanoma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher rates of melanoma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s important that your skin is screened for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers regularly. This can be done by your doctor or a dermatologist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, seeing a specialist like a dermatologist isn\u2019t always easy \u2014 you need a referral, and it can take months to get in. But mammograms can help. They involve an X-ray that delivers a picture of the breast\u2019s internal structure to screen for cancers that cannot be seen or felt. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Screening recommendations are about to change in Canada:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current recommendations are for women to start having mammograms at age 50. Ontario is reducing the age to 40 in the fall of 2024 because experts say 50 is too late.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting mammograms early and being diligent about getting them every two years will better allow for early detection and higher rates of cure.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self breast-examinations can be done at home and help you become familiar with your body and detect any changes. Although The Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health recommends against self breast-examination due to the chances of increasing anxiety and leading to unnecessary tests. Ultimately, it is your call if you wish to do them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Cervical cancer<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women across the globe. Looking at Canada alone, one in 168 women is expected to develop cervical cancer in her lifetime, and one in 478 is expected to die of it. This type of cancer is caused by cells in the cervix that change over time \u2014 but a cervical cancer screening can spot these changes, so your healthcare provider can monitor and treat them if necessary. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Screening includes:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Pap smear (also called a Pap test) and\/or\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a human papillomavirus (HPV) test (HPV is a common sexually transmitted infection that can cause diseases ranging from genital warts to cervical cancer)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both screening tests use a swab to collect cells from the cervix, which is then sent to a lab for testing. Canadian healthcare experts recommend women receive cervical cancer screening:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every three years starting around age 25 and continuing until about 70 \u2014 unless there are changes to the cells, in which case you\u2019d need more frequent screenings.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After 70, if your three previous Pap tests have been normal, you don\u2019t need another Pap or HPV test.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Lung cancer<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Canadian Cancer Society, one in 14 women will develop lung and bronchus cancer in their lifetime, and one in 21 will die from it. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you actively \u2014 or used to \u2014 smoke or consume tobacco and are between the ages 55 to 74 you should get screened for lung cancer with a low-dose CT scan once every three years until advised to stop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Colorectal cancer<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About one in 18 women will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/chronic-diseases\/cancer\/colorectal-cancer.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">develop colorectal cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in her lifetime, and one in 43 will die from it. Screening tests can include a stool test completed at home, a flexible sigmoidoscopy, or a colonoscopy (using special cameras to look inside the rectum and bowel). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indications for screening for colorectal cancer include: <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are aged 50 to 74 and not at high risk, you should have a stool test every two years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a family history of colorectal cancer, a personal history of polyps or inflammatory bowel disease, or inherited conditions like familial adenomatous polyposis or have Lynch Syndrome screening will begin at an earlier age, to be determined with your doctor.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are over 75 you should consider stool testing with your doctor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re experiencing any persistent changes in bowel habits, blood in stool, or abdominal pain, speak to your doctor immediately \u2014 they may recommend an investigation like these screening tests.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider will advise on how often you need to repeat the screening.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Immunizations<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a breakdown of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/publications\/healthy-living\/canadian-immunization-guide-part-3-vaccination-specific-populations\/page-2-immunization-of-adults.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and when you should get them:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Diptheria, Tetanus: <\/strong>For everyone every 10 years<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Herpes zoster (shingles): <\/strong>For adults 50 and older without contraindications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Human papillomavirus (HPV): <\/strong>For women 26 and younger, and those 27 and older if they have a risk of exposure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Influenza: <\/strong>Annually for all adults without contraindications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Measles, mumps: <\/strong>For those born in 1970 or later\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Meningococcal conjugate: <\/strong>For healthy adults 24 and older<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Pertussis: <\/strong>For everyone 18 and older<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Pneumococcal polysaccharide 23-valent: <\/strong>For everyone 65 and older<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Polio: <\/strong>Everyone in Canada<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Rubella: <\/strong>For susceptible adults<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Varicella (chickenpox): <\/strong>For susceptible adults between ages 18 and 49\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Medical conditions females should seek care for<\/b><b><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Perimenopause and menopause<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 2025, it is estimated that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.menopause.org\/docs\/default-source\/2014\/nams-recomm-for-clinical-care\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over 1 billion women <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will have experienced menopause across North America. Despite it\u2019s prevalence, there continues to be a lack of public knowledge on the topic affecting so many women. Perimenopause and menopausal (absence of menses for one year) symptoms can cause:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Physical symptoms <\/strong>like hot flashes, vaginal dryness or irritation, or pain with intercourse.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Emotional symptoms <\/strong>including mood changes, irritability, and quicker to anger or a reduced libido.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Mental symptoms <\/strong>including difficulty concentrating and short-term memory loss, or difficulty falling or staying asleep.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though this is a natural, and unavoidable process women will endure through their lifetime, you do not need to suffer through these uncomfortable symptoms. Speak to your healthcare provider about treatment options that feel right for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Mental health<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One in five Canadians experience mental illness.
