That\u2019s a major problem because they will miss opportunities for appropriate screening, preventative care, and early detection of certain diseases.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practicing proactive health by getting screenings at recommended ages even before symptoms arrive can help improve longevity and quality of life. In this blog, we outline the key appointments you need to maintain your health and which tests you need.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Doctor appointments men should make annually, no matter their age<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Primary care doctors<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you hit 18, it\u2019s time to switch from a pediatrician to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/blog\/what-is-a-family-doctor\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family doctor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or general practitioner, who helps people at any age maintain good health. At the appointment, your doctor will perform a physical exam to collect your basic health information, check vital signs, and keep an eye on your health trends over time. They also ensure you get recommended screenings and vaccinations depending on your age and risk factors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t have any pressing health concerns to discuss with your doctor, you may not need an annual check-up. Depending on your age and health risks, you may be able to wait a little longer between visits \u2014 but your healthcare provider will tell you how frequently you should go.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Preventative health and screening for men<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is recommended that healthy men are screened for:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Blood pressure: <\/strong>High blood pressure is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke and should be checked regularly by a health care provider. Performed at most visits is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/diseases\/heart-health\/high-blood-pressure\/signs-symptoms-high-blood-pressure.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure screening<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to lower your risk of heart attack. Men are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/menshealthfoundation.ca\/mens-health-conditions\/heart-attack-in-men\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">twice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as likely as women to suffer from one, but a blood pressure test can determine if you\u2019re at risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Cholesterol: <\/strong>This is a fat found in the blood. It can form fatty deposits on your artery walls and block blood flow. All men over 40 years should have their cholesterol levels monitored. Early detection of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pwc.ottawaheart.ca\/education\/heart-health-education\/general-information\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">modifiable risk factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can significantly reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or other cardiovascular disease by up to 80 percent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Diabetes: <\/strong>Diabetes is when your body cannot produce insulin or it cannot properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by your pancreas. Insulin\u2019s role is to regulate how much glucose (sugar) is in your blood. Over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/publications\/diseases-conditions\/framework-diabetes-canada.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Canadians are living with diabetes. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/guidelines.diabetes.ca\/cpg\/chapter4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes Canada <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends getting tested with either a fasting glucose and\/or a hemoglobin A1C blood tests every three years starting at age 40. This should be done sooner if you\u2019re at a high risk \u2014 meaning, you\u2019re overweight or prediabetic, have a close relative with diabetes, have high blood pressure, or have a history of heart disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Osteoporosis: <\/strong>Osteoporosis is a reduction in bone mass and it affects more than 2 million Canadians. This condition increases your risk of fractures; in fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/osteoporosis.ca\/men-and-osteoporosis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one in five<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> men will break a bone caused by osteoporosis. Screening for this can be done with bone mineral density testing starting at age 65.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: <\/strong>Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) is a bulge or dilatation in the aorta, a major blood vessel that delivers blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Men over 65 who have ever smoked should be screened for this with an ultrasound.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Sexually transmitted infections: <\/strong>If sexually active, you should be screened regularly for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmaj.ca\/content\/195\/24\/E844\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlamydia and gonorrhea,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because most often these infections have no symptoms at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Preventative care men should seek outside of the family doctor&#8217;s office\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Vision: <\/strong>Adults between 20 and 64 should have an eye exam every two years, but those with diabetes should have one yearly. After age 65, you should have an eye exam every year since you\u2019re more at risk of getting weakened vision and having an eye condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Hearing: <\/strong>Hearing loss is the reduced ability to hear sounds, whether gradually or suddenly. It can occur at any age, and it has many causes. Contact your doctor for a test if you\u2019re experiencing any issues such as an inability to hear whispers, hear with one ear, or listen at high decibel levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Routine Dental Care: <\/strong>Dental health experts recommend teeth cleaning once or twice a year, depending on how well you care for your teeth and gums if you have dental problems and how fast tartar builds up on your teeth. Just be sure to visit your dentist at least once a year \u2014 they can help with proactive dental care, treating issues before they worsen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Cancer screening for men<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Skin Cancer: <\/strong>Canadian men are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/sun-safety\/skin-cancer.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than women to develop melanoma in their lifetime; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dermatology.ca\/public-patients\/skin\/melanoma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one in 59<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> men will develop the cancer. It is important men have their skin screened for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers regularly. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Checking your skin and early detection can improve survival. 59% of melanomas are detected by self-examination, and early melanomas have a 90% survival rate. Seeing a specialist like a dermatologist isn\u2019t always easy \u2014 you need a referral, and it can take months to get in. Indications for screening include:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9054332\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadian Urological Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends early screening. Most men should begin screening with a blood test called prostate-specific antigen (PSA) at age 50.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High-risk men are those who have a family history of prostate cancer, are of African or Caribbean ancestry. These groups should consider PSA testing at age 45.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A digital rectal exam (DRE) is when a health care provider inserts a gloved finger into the rectum to assess for any lumps or abnormalities. This can be indicated to investigate symptoms like urinary incontinence, hemorrhoids, or a change in bowel habits. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5847354\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DRE is no longer recommended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a screening test for prostate cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Testicular Cancer: <\/strong>Testicular cancer is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/cancer-types\/testicular\/statistics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cancer in men between the ages of 15 and 35, but is the most treatable when caught early. The Canadian Cancer Society recommends all men should be aware of how their testicles feel and look (the best time to assess this is after a warm shower or bath) and should inform their healthcare provider if they notice any changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Colorectal Cancer: <\/strong>Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer in Canada and is the second leading cause of death from cancer in men. Screening tests can include a stool test completed at home, a flexible sigmoidoscopy, or a colonoscopy (using special cameras to look inside the rectum and bowel). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indications for screening for colorectal cancer include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are aged 50 to 74 and not at high risk, you should have a stool test every two years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a family history of colorectal cancer, a personal history of polyps or inflammatory bowel disease or inherited conditions like familial adenomatous polyposis or Lynch Syndrome, screening will begin at an earlier age. This is determined with your healthcare provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are over 75 you should consider stool testing with your doctor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re experiencing any persistent changes in bowel habits, blood in stool, or abdominal pain, speak to your healthcare provider immediately \u2014 they may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/healthy-living\/your-health\/diseases\/screening-colorectal-cancer.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a colorectal cancer investigation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Lung Cancer: <\/strong>Lung and bronchus cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death for both Canadian men and women in Canada \u2014 however, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/cancer-types\/lung\/statistics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will die from it than women. If you actively or used to smoke or consume tobacco and are between ages 55 to 74 you should get screened for lung cancer with a low-dose CT scan once every three years until advised to stop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Immunizations<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some infections and diseases can be prevented by immunizations. Here\u2019s a breakdown of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/publications\/healthy-living\/canadian-immunization-guide-part-3-vaccination-specific-populations\/page-2-immunization-of-adults.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and when you should get them:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diphtheria, Tetanus:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For everyone every 10 years<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Herpes zoster (shingles):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For adults 50 and older without contraindications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Human papillomavirus (HPV):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For men 26 and younger, and those 27 and older if they have a risk of exposure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Influenza:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Annually for all adults without contraindications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Measles, mumps: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those born in 1970 or later\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Meningococcal conjugate:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For healthy adults 24 and older<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pertussis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: For everyone 18 and older<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pneumococcal polysaccharide 23-valent:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For everyone 65 and older<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Polio: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone in Canada<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rubella:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For susceptible adults<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Varicella (chickenpox):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For susceptible adults between ages 18 and 49\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many Canadian men are already consulting healthcare practitioners when concerns arise, it&#8217;s crucial to prioritize preventative care. Early detection through recommended screenings significantly enhances the chances of effectively managing and treating potential health issues, thereby reducing the risk of serious conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Medical conditions men should seek care for:<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Erectile Dysfunction (ED)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/conditions\/erectile-dysfunction-treatment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erectile dysfunction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient to complete sexual performances as desired. ED is common, and becomes increasingly prevalent in aging men, with an estimated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8525522\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40% of men in their 40\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and increasing about 10% each decade. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several risk factors for the development of ED that can be addressed to improve the condition, these include: diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, stress, and smoking.
