In many cases they can also have additional benefits, such as reducing period flow and the intensity of cramps. Some of your options include:<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The pill<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A contraceptive classic for decades, the pill or combination pill as it\u2019s sometimes known, contains estrogen and progestin. These hormones work together to prevent pregnancy in a few different ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For starters, they stop your ovaries from releasing an egg each month. Additionally, they thicken your cervical mucus so it\u2019s harder for sperm to reach an egg. And, finally, they thin the lining of your uterus, making it more difficult for a fertilized egg to implant. All of this means that the pill is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1828173\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">99.7%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> effective at preventing pregnancy when taken according to instructions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The mini pill<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This form of oral contraceptive contains the hormone progestin but not estrogen, making it a great alternative for those who shouldn\u2019t take estrogen (more on that below). As a result, this medication thickens your cervical mucus so sperm can\u2019t reach an egg to fertilize it as easily. In addition, it thins the lining of your uterus so it\u2019s harder for a fertilized egg to implant there. It may also help in preventing ovulation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mini pill is also 99.7% effective at preventing pregnancy, but it\u2019s very timing dependent and must be taken at the same time every day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The patch<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The patch is a small, sticky square that you attach to your arm, bum, back, or abdomen so you can absorb the progestin and estrogen in it through your skin. You must change the patch once a week for three weeks leaving the fourth week of the month patch-free. This method of contraception uses the same hormones as the combination pill and is as effective when used correctly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Contraceptive implant<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This method uses <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hshc.ca\/contraceptive-implant-nexplanon\/#:~:text=You%20will%20need%20to%20purchase,may%20not%20cover%20it%20yet.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">etonogestrel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to prevent your ovaries from releasing an egg and thickens your cervical mucus to make it harder for sperm to enter. Once it\u2019s implanted under the skin of your arm, it can provide up to three years of contraception.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The vaginal contraceptive ring<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ring is made of a soft plastic ring containing the same hormones as the combination pill. It can be inserted into the vagina at home for three-weeks at a time, followed by a week without it. Like the pill, the vaginal contraceptive ring is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1828173\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">99.7% effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at preventing pregnancy when used correctly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Hormonal intrauterine system\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This device uses the progestin hormone levonorgestrel to prevent unintended pregnancy. It must be placed into your uterus by a healthcare provider, where it can stay for up to five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The birth control shot<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As its name suggests, this form of birth control must be injected every 12 weeks to maintain enough progestin in the body to prevent pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Non-hormonal intrauterine devices<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women who prefer to use a non-hormonal form of birth control may consider using the copper IUD. Once implanted in your uterus, this method is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ppt.on.ca\/factsheets\/copper-iud\/#:~:text=The%20copper%20IUD%20is%2099,one%20person%20would%20get%20pregnant.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">99% effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at preventing pregnancy for up to ten years.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The emergency contraception pill<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s a backup method and not a form of routine contraception, the emergency contraception pill (ECP) or the \u201cmorning after pill&#8221; as it&#8217;s sometimes known, can be used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. It\u2019s available over the counter at the pharmacy without a prescription.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two kinds of ECP. One uses the drug levonorgestrel to prevent pregnancy. It\u2019s effective if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. The second form of ECP uses the drug ulipristal and can be taken up to five days or 120 hours after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In both cases, the sooner you take the ECP, the more effective it is. Within 24 hours of unprotected sex, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ppt.on.ca\/factsheets\/emergency-contraception\/#:~:text=not%20abortion%20pills.-,How%20effective%20are%20ECPs%3F,77%25%20effective%20at%20preventing%20pregnancy.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the levonorgestrel ECP is 95% effective at preventing pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while the ulipristal ECP stops it 77% of the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Is birth control safe?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormonal birth control is both safe and effective, but it\u2019s not for everyone. Because they contain estrogen, the combination pill, the patch, and the ring may slightly increase your risk of venous thromboembolism, otherwise known as blood clots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This risk is greater for women over 35 who smoke. It\u2019s also not the right choice if you have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1828173\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certain medical conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hypertension<\/li>\n<li>Migraines with aura (combination pill)<\/li>\n<li>Breast cancer<\/li>\n<li>Viral hepatitis<\/li>\n<li>Personal history of venous thromboembolism<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re worried that you fall into one of these categories, estrogen-containing products aren\u2019t <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itsaplan.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your only option<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
