Here\u2019s why this should be a priority and how you can implement changes that benefit your team and organization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Why should mental health be a priority for employers this year?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows that as many as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ontario.cmha.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/CMHA_Mental-Health-Works-Guidebook-8.5-x11r.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one in five<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Canadians experiences a mental health issue yearly. Based on the size of your team, just how many people may be affected by this? When an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employee<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t taken care of, it can have a ripple effect on the organization \u2014 more workplace absenteeism and reduced productivity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A workplace focusing on mental health also helps with employee retention and attracting new talent. In fact, mental health is so important to Canadian employees that a 2020 report showed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrreporter.com\/focus-areas\/compensation-and-benefits\/majority-of-workers-would-take-lower-pay-for-better-mental-health-support-survey\/325525\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">77%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would leave their current jobs for the same pay if their new employer offered better mental health support.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">January is the perfect time to make a change by prioritizing your team\u2019s mental health and well-being and adding value to your organization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What are the main causes that negatively affect employees\u2019 mental health?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A handful of things can negatively affect your employees\u2019 mental health. They include:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Workplace stress<\/h3>\n<p>This can be caused by anything from heavy workloads to a change in job roles. Studies show higher employee stress can<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33654542\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower productivity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> significantly in the workplace. <\/span>It may even cause some to take stress leave from work, which can also put a strain on your other team members. Additionally, stress can trigger mental health conditions, like depression or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK470361\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anxiety<\/a>, or worsen it for team members who already struggle with these illnesses.<\/p>\n<h3>No work-life balance<\/h3>\n<p>Dedication is important, but your employees\u2019 mental health can suffer if they don\u2019t have enough time to themselves outside work. Talk about mental health in the workplace<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conversations about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/blog\/2020\/08\/26\/how-to-improve-mental-health-in-the-workplace\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are one of the best ways<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to address mental health in the workplace<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Talking about it helps create a safe space for employees who struggle with mental illness and their team members. But not everyone is open to talking about their personal struggles. One study showed that only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ontario.cmha.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/CMHA_Mental-Health-Works-Guidebook-8.5-x11r.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">36% of employees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would discuss a mental health concern with their manager.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let your team know that they don\u2019t have to share anything personal but that your organization is here to support them through their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/business\/thought-leadership\/how-to-support-your-teams-mental-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health journey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You don\u2019t need to offer advice either; leave that to the professionals. Having <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intentional check-ins with employees<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, providing comfort and support through listening, offering <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employee mental health day<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s, and encouraging your team to use their benefits plan with mental health resources can be extremely helpful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>2. Conduct regular mental health training for leaders<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Managers aren\u2019t expected to be therapists or have extensive mental health training. But conducting regular mental health training sessions can help managers lead by example, create a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psychologically safe workplace<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, make employees <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feel comfortable<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and reduce absenteeism and turnover.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study found that just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/buy\/2015-30082-001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of mental health awareness training enhanced leaders\u2019 knowledge and attitude towards mental health and the intent to promote it in the workplace. The study also found that this resulted in a reduction in the duration of employee short-term disability claims.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/topics\/workplace\/mental-health\/train-managers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">training your managers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in skill sets that support mental health and positive work relationships, implementing regular <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">check-in questions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, creating a welcoming and safe work environment, and educating team leaders about your organization\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/blog\/2022\/06\/01\/why-employees-are-looking-for-a-boost-in-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employee assistance programs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>3. Offer a hybrid work model<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pandemic normalized working from home for many people. If it has been tough trying to get employees to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">return to work <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the office \u2014 especially after the holidays \u2014 consider a hybrid work model. A hybrid work model is a great way to improve employee retention and have a happier, healthier team invested in their roles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>4. Team-building activities<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social connections at work and mental health go hand-in-hand. Employees spend most of their week interacting with coworkers, likely even more than with their loved ones. A team that works well together and enjoys each other\u2019s company helps <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">build trust <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and makes for a positive, collaborative, and productive workplace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t be afraid to get creative with team-building activities, either. Try board games, team lunches, themed meetings, or anything else that comes to mind \u2014 your employees will likely appreciate the effort, and it\u2019s a great way to boost morale.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>5. Implement employee mental health days<\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health days are designed to give employees time away from their workplace and its stressors. In a recent study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/research\/gen-z-workplace-statistics#great-place-to-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">82% of Gen Z employees<\/a> said mental health days are important to them \u2014 but it\u2019s not just this demographic that can benefit. Offering mental health days at your workplace can help reduce stress, anxiety, and burnout, and improve productivity for teams of all ages \u2014 it also helps to destigmatize mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>6. Manageable workloads<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losing sight of how much your team has on their plate can be detrimental to their mental health. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stress.org\/workplace-stress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, most people ranked workload as their biggest cause of stress. Being aware of just how heavy your team\u2019s workload is and ensuring there aren\u2019t unrealistic deadlines can help prevent employee stress and other mental health issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure your managers have open lines of communication with their teams about their workloads. If employees feel overwhelmed, they should be able to talk to their manager about extending applicable deadlines or delegate tasks to others who may have more time.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>7. Encourage taking breaks<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easy for employees to lose sight of how much time has passed without a break \u2014 some may even feel guilty about taking them.
