From that perspective, it\u2019s easy to see why employees would want to feel good about the time they spend at work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent years, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">challenges brought on by labour shortages and recruitment issues have also made quality of life at work a key issue for organizations. Gauging quality of life in the workplace can help employers diagnose issues related to morale, efficiency, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">productivity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while improving <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work-life balance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can support <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/blog\/2022\/02\/23\/employee-retention-4-effective-strategies-for-employers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talent retention and loyalty.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As organizations move towards trying to improve quality of life in their workplace (often referred to as \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbaknol.com\/human-resource-management\/quality-of-work-life-qwl\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">QWL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d), they often realize that this is a complex and multifaceted issue, with many interrelated dimensions. As a result, this is an issue that\u2019s best addressed holistically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So where should smart organizations invest their budget and energy to improve quality of life at work? Here\u2019s everything you need to know about QWL, including the rationale behind it and why it matters.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>How to define good quality of life at work<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quality of life at work is a term that\u2019s often used to describe the broader job-related experience of an employee, which encompasses the company culture, general working conditions, how interested an employee is in their work tasks, how involved an employee feels, the degree of autonomy and accountability they have, and the recognition they get for the work they\u2019ve done, amongst many other factors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a concept, quality of life at work tends to focus on the employee as a person, rather than just the work they\u2019re doing. It differs from the more general concept of quality of life, though the two are related, as one feeds the other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7967557\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4796517\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have shown that a lack of quality of life at work is linked to higher levels of work-related stress, burnout, and anxiety, which in turn lead to lower job performance and significant costs for organizations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/309220437_EXPLANATION_THE_IMPACT_OF_THE_QUALITY_OF_WORKING_LIFE_ON_HUMAN_FACTORS_IN_THE_WORKPLACE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research has also shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that when organizations implement quality of life at work programs, job performance improves. By giving workers more flexibility and permission to disconnect after hours, companies tend to have employees who are more satisfied with their jobs, more engaged, less likely to quit, and in better health both physically and mentally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply put, quality of life at work can lead to quality of business. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his book <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Happiness-Advantage-Principles-Psychology-Performance\/dp\/0307591549\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Happiness Advantage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Shawn Achor, a leading expert on happiness, success, and potential, showcases research that indicates happiness at work can increase sales by 37%, productivity by 31%, and accuracy on tasks by 19%. Linking happiness at work to employee engagement, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/349484\/state-of-the-global-workplace.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gallup\u2019s 2022 State of the Global Workplace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that companies with engaged workers report 23% higher profits than companies with unemployed workers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One way to implement a quality of life at work initiative in your organization is to link the improvement of working conditions for employees with the company&#8217;s overall performance. These two elements can go hand in hand, satisfying the expectations of employees while delivering results for employers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are other avenues <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> help<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> improve quality of life at work for employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Find ways to limit hours<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26653530\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016 study <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">showed that employees who use a mobile device for work during family time experienced more conflicts at home and higher rates of burnout, often leading to a decreased commitment to their employer. The use of mobile devices outside of regular work hours also meant the spouses of employees viewed their partner\u2019s employers in a more negative light, increasing the likelihood of the employee quitting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With more employees today working remotely, workers may feel pressured to respond to messages at odd hours or as soon as they arrive. While many employees who engage in after-hours work are well-intentioned, this isn\u2019t a beneficial way <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to find work-life balance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and their dedication may make other employees feel like they also need to respond to their messages 24\/7. This creates a negative feedback loop that can increase rates of burnout, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impact absenteeism and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> employee <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turnover<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and harm company culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, leaders and managers should eliminate this <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">source of stress at the workplace<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, encouraging employees to disconnect after hours and regularly remind them of the value of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">managing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">personal life and professional life<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While some provinces <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/business\/ontario-s-right-to-disconnect-law-who-qualifies-and-what-are-the-loopholes-1.5936773\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like Ontario<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have begun implementing \u201cright to disconnect\u201d laws, efforts to encourage employees to limit their hours are always more effective when they\u2019re an integral part of a company\u2019s culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Acknowledge hard work<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your organization\u2019s rewards and recognition system should be designed to ensure employees regularly receive both material and psychological rewards for their hard work. While some organizations focus heavily on providing material rewards, like gift cards, sometimes, a simple, public, timely \u201cGreat job\u201d from the right leader can go a long way in making an employee feel seen, appreciated, and valued. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rewards and recognition can be a tremendous source of motivation for your team, so make sure they have a place in your organization\u2019s culture to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve employee satisfaction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Change routines to re-energize employees<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allow employees to tackle new challenges by switching up their responsibilities from time to time. A useful tool for managers here is the \u201cplate exercise.\u201d When a full-time employee leaves, managers can use this opportunity to ask the remaining team members to imagine their current responsibilities as if they\u2019re on a big plate in front of them. You can even organize quarterly \u201cshow and tell\u201d presentations where employees are given the opportunity to share with their colleagues something they\u2019ve learned recently by completing an online course or reading books or websites about a topic of their choice that relates to their career.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Build a culture of care, trust, and flexibility<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prioritizing health and wellness can help greatly improve quality of life at work and work-life balance for employees.
