Fortunately, with early intervention, the prospect of recovery is bright. The five-year survival rate of someone diagnosed with skin cancer is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianskincancerfoundation.com\/skin-cancer\/#:~:text=One%20in%20every%20three%20cancers,deadliest%20form%20of%20skin%20cancer.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">99%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when the cancer is treated in early stages. That\u2019s why regularly checking moles for warning signs of melanoma could be a life-saving practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is melanoma?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are three types of skin cancer \u2014 basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. With melanoma, cancer begins in the melanocytes, which are the cells that give colour to pigmented tissue. You have melanocytes in your eyes, skin, and liver. It\u2019s possible to develop melanoma in all three places, but it\u2019s most commonly found on the skin. Since moles have a high concentration of melanocytes, they\u2019re often the starting point for melanoma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your skin is made up of several layers, and each layer is composed of cells. Melanocytes live in the deepest layer of the skin. They normally multiply and shed in a controlled way. Melanocytes become cancerous when they start to multiply rapidly, forming tumours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the time, melanoma forms on parts of your body that have been exposed to the sun, like your face, back and legs. However, it\u2019s possible for melanoma to develop anywhere on the body. It doesn\u2019t always start in a mole. People with darker skin are less likely to develop melanoma. If they do, it\u2019s often on their palms, nail beds, and soles of the feet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melanoma risk factors<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although we do know the conditions that make melanoma more likely, we still don\u2019t know exactly why it occurs. Risk factors for melanoma include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age 35-75.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lighter skin, regardless of shade.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blonde or red hair.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having more than 50 moles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having large moles, greater than two inches in diameter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noticing new moles, or that your moles are changing in size or shape.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family or personal history of skin cancer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History of severe sunburns.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History of tanning bed use.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weakened immune system.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men are at a slightly higher <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/chronic-diseases\/cancer\/melanoma-skin-cancer.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of developing melanoma than women. In Canada, 1 in 42 men, and 1 in 56 women will develop melanoma during their lifetime.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melanoma symptoms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people have moles, and they\u2019re not automatically a cause for worry. Taking time to learn what yours look like can help catch melanoma early. When doing your mole check, look out for these warning signs:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mole is painful or itchy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new mole that\u2019s flat, resembling a freckle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in shape or colour to a mole you\u2019ve always had.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new spot that\u2019s a combination of colours like red, blue, white, black, or brown.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moles that suddenly have a smooth surface when they were once scaly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eroding or oozing moles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moles with uneven borders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asymmetrical moles, where one side is a very different shape than the other.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have moles that are bigger than a pencil eraser, or a large cluster of moles, check these sites often. They have a higher likelihood of becoming melanoma.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should I see a dermatologist for my mole?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re worried about whether or not a mole you have is melanoma, there\u2019s a way to determine whether you should see a doctor. It\u2019s the ABCDE method, which stands for:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A \u2014 asymmetry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B \u2014 irregular or uneven borders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C \u2014 dark in colour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D \u2014 large in diameter, over a quarter inch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E \u2014 evolving over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your mole displays any of the above characteristics, see a dermatologist as soon as possible. They\u2019ll do further examinations and tests to help you determine whether or not you need to undergo treatment for the worrisome mole.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mole mapping<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mole mapping, sometimes called dermal scanning, provides an in-depth look at the health of your skin. Using technology called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/providers\/mole-mapping\/\">FotoFinder Automated Total Body Mapping (ATBM) Master<\/a>, you can get full-body pictures to share with your dermatologist. The scanning machine creates high resolution images of your moles and lesions. Then it uses artificial intelligence to flag possible skin cancer. Your dermatologist can use your scan results to inform a personalized treatment plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone can benefit from mole mapping, but it\u2019s especially useful for people who have one or more risk factors for developing melanoma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melanoma stages and treatment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your mole turns out to be melanoma, the treatment varies depending on the stage of the skin cancer. Melanoma stages are broken down into early and advanced stage melanoma. There are numbered phases under both stages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early melanoma includes cancer stages 0 to II, and affects the surface layers of the skin. In these stages the cancer hasn\u2019t spread to lymph nodes, and is up to 2 mm in size. Treatment involves removing the affected mole or skin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advanced melanoma includes stages III and IV cancer. It\u2019s characterized by cancer that\u2019s spread within the skin or to at least one lymph node near the original cancer site. At the most advanced stage, cancer has spread to other areas on the skin, faraway lymph nodes, and other organs in the body. Treatment involves procedures like radiation and chemotherapy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevention<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are daily habits that you can practice to lower your risk of melanoma. Consider working some of the following tips into your routine:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use sunscreen daily that\u2019s SPF 30 or higher \u2014 including in wintertime.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay out of the sun, especially around midday when it\u2019s brightest .<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep your skin covered by long layers of clothing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wear a wide-brimmed hat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid tanning beds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep kids safe from sunburns, since bad sunburns increase the likelihood of melanoma later in life.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between checking your moles at home and mole mapping technology, there\u2019s never been more options for beating skin cancer. Early intervention is key, so consider working mole checks into your at-home health routines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mole mapping is a great practice for preventing skin cancer.
