All together, these factors paint a picture of your mental well-being. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s an introduction to what mental health really is, simple habits you can adopt to support your mental health, the difference between mental health and mental illness, and the most common mental illnesses affecting Canadians today.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building better mental health\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone has mental health. Simply put, it\u2019s your level of psychological, emotional, and social well-being.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like you have different states of physical health, you have varying states of mental health. When you get a cold, you experience a short period of physical illness. Your mental health fluctuates in the same way throughout your life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes your mental health is great, but inevitably, life\u2019s rough patches will cause the occasional mental health decline. In these times, just like when you\u2019re sick, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/blog\/the-benefits-of-taking-time-off-work-for-your-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">things like rest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, care, and medicine can help get your mental health back on track.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simple habits to support your mental health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re looking for ways to strengthen your mental health and improve feelings of well-being, there are some simple daily habits like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/blog\/six-reasons-you-should-start-journaling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">starting a mental health journal<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">practicing gratitude<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that you can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/blog\/why-you-should-check-in-on-your-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incorporate into your routine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boost your mental health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, elevate your mood, and become more resilient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few more science-backed tips to help you support your mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Make social connections<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Numerous studies have demonstrated the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">importance of social connections for mental health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Research has shown that social relationships can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au\/health\/healthyliving\/Strong-relationships-strong-health#:~:text=Health%20benefits%20of%20strong%20relationships,-Throughout%20your%20life&amp;text=The%20benefits%20of%20social%20connections,more%20trusting%20and%20cooperative%20relationships.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower rates of anxiety and depression and raise self-esteem and empathy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, among other benefits. They can also strengthen your immune system, help you recover from disease faster, and may even lengthen your life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loneliness and social isolation, on the other hand, can have a disastrous impact on your mental health and well-being. Science now views the health risks of prolonged isolation as equivalent to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.unh.edu\/blog\/2022\/05\/prolonged-social-isolation-loneliness-are-equivalent-smoking-15-cigarettes-day#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20National%20Institute,as%20many%20as%2015%20years.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smoking 15 cigarettes a day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. People who don\u2019t have sufficient social contact are also more vulnerable to anxiety, depression, antisocial behaviour, and even suicidal behaviours, which usually only increases their isolation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laughing is good for mental health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so make sure to always make time for friends and loved ones. While phone calls and online chats can be uplifting, nothing is as energizing and stress-relieving as spending time in person with others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While not the same as human companionship, companionship from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.uk\/explore-mental-health\/a-z-topics\/pets-and-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pets can also help improve mental health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by reducing anxiety, boosting self-confidence, facilitating social connections, and increasing exercise, among other benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Exercise regularly<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staying active is as good for your mind as it is for your body. Exercise and physical activity stimulate different brain chemicals, so the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effects of exercise on stress <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can help you feel happier, more relaxed, and less anxious.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercising also improves mental health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1470658\/#:~:text=Exercise%20improves%20mental%20health%20by,self%2Desteem%20and%20cognitive%20function.&amp;text=Exercise%20has%20also%20been%20found,self%2Desteem%20and%20social%20withdrawal.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reducing depression and negative mood while improving self-esteem and cognitive function<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you\u2019re having a hard time motivating yourself to go to the gym alone, try switching up your exercise routine. Look for a local recreational sports league you can join so you can play with others or try a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meditation and yoga<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> class, which can also <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve mental health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Go for a walk in nature<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spending time in nature has been found to have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/blog\/mental-health-benefits-for-being-in-nature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a positive impact on mental health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including on anxiety and depression. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health says that spending just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-019-44097-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 to 20 minutes per day outdoors in nature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be beneficial and calm <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stress hormones<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The benefits of nature for mental health <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can also boost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utoronto.ca\/news\/walk-park-how-spending-time-nature-can-boost-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">memory, creativity, and work satisfaction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/experiment-reveals-what-1-hour-in-nature-does-to-the-human-brain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve healing, blood pressure, and focus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To spend more time in nature, try going for a hike or visiting a local park. If possible, go in the daytime, as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sunlight and vitamin D can also be good for mental health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Another great way to spend more time in green spaces is to volunteer to plant trees, which can also allow you to meet new people and get physical exercise while doing something good for your community.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Maintain regular sleep hours<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effects of lack of sleep on mental health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are well-documented. Simply put: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep is important for mental health <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 it helps regulate emotions and cognitive skills like attention, learning, and memory. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep deprivation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also cause mood changes, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/how-sleep-affects-mental-health-4783067\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased irritability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, living with mental health challenges can affect your sleep, which in turn can have a negative impact on your mental health. To break out of this cycle, make sure to prioritize your sleep. Exercising throughout the day, but not close to bedtime, can help you fall asleep faster. Performing stretches before bed can also help <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/14655916\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve sleep quality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otherwise, keep your bedroom dark and make sure it\u2019s neither too cold nor too warm. Lastly, try to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/bedtime-screen-time-may-reduce-sleep-quality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoid bedtime screen time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or stimulants like alcohol, caffeine, or nicotine for a few hours before going to bed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Be careful with social media<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While social media can have positive benefits, it can also negatively impact your mental health. Various studies have demonstrated this <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connection between social media use and mental health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7364393\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tied prolonged use of social media platforms to negative signs and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29555130\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that almost 70% of the participants reported checking their social media in bed before going to sleep, which then led to going to bed late, sleeping less, and sleeping worse, all of which aren\u2019t great for mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To improve your relationship with social media, ask yourself what you can do to use social media more intentionally, instead of finding yourself scrolling your feed merely out of habit or when you\u2019re bored. Are there better boundaries you could establish? Can you experiment with skipping social media for one day per week? Can you turn off your phone at least an hour before bed and keep it somewhere other than in your bedroom?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difference between mental illness and mental health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health and mental illness aren\u2019t interchangeable terms \u2014 they mean two different things. Mental illness is a health condition. When you\u2019re mentally ill, you experience changes to your thinking, emotions, or behaviour that impair your ability to function socially, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/what-is-mental-illness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at work and within the family unit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you\u2019re living with a mental illness, you\u2019re not alone. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.camh.ca\/en\/driving-change\/the-crisis-is-real\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50% of Canadians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> either have a mental illness currently or have had one in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike mental health, not everyone experiences mental illness. If you have a period where you feel sad or stressed, it doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re mentally ill. Fluctuations in your feeling of well-being are a natural part of life. It\u2019s when your thoughts, feelings and behaviour start negatively affecting your daily life that it\u2019s possible you\u2019re living with a mental illness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cmha.ca\/brochure\/fast-facts-about-mental-illness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental illness doesn&#8217;t indicate poor mental health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Someone with a mental illness can be in good mental health the same way someone without a mental illness can be in poor mental health. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning to recognize <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common mental illnesses\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are lots of different types of mental illness. Sometimes mental illness is chronic, meaning it lasts for a year or longer and requires management like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/providers\/mental-health-therapist\/\">therapy<\/a> or medication, or a combination of both. With other mental illnesses, the duration is shorter and you may be able to manage them completely with the right support.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mood and anxiety disorders<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mood and anxiety disorders are the most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mental illnesses in Canada. Each one has different symptoms, but there are some general commonalities. People with a mental illness from this category have persistent feelings of anxiety, fear, or nervousness and low mood. In one year, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4.4 million<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Canadians reported they\u2019re living with a mood or anxiety disorder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This group of mental illnesses includes, but isn\u2019t limited to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panic disorder, which causes people to have feelings of intense fear when there is no real danger.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD): With OCD, people experience obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours that make it hard to function in everyday life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bipolar disorder: This illness comes with periods of intense emotional highs called manic states, followed by periods of depression.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Major depression: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/blog\/depression-signs-and-symptoms-how-to-recognize-depression\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> causes long periods of deep sadness and disinterest in socializing or activities you once enjoyed. It can impact your appetite, sleep habits, and ability to concentrate, reduce your energy levels, and lead to feelings of guilt, thoughts of self-harm, or even suicidal thoughts.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating disorders<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/blog\/six-signs-you-might-have-an-eating-disorder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a group of mental illnesses that distort your relationship with food, causing changes in your thoughts and behaviours around eating. With some eating disorders, people eat very little food. Others cause people to binge-eat or overeat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nied.ca\/about-eating-disorders-in-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Canadians are living with an eating disorder. This group of mental illnesses has the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21727255\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mortality rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common eating disorders include:<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anorexia nervosa. People with anorexia may have a body weight that\u2019s dangerously low. The illness causes people to limit their eating or to exercise excessively in order to avoid weight gain. With anorexia, people often feel like their body mass is larger than it really is.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bulimia nervosa. Bulimia is characterized by a binge-purge cycle. Binging is classified as eating a large amount of food at once, usually more than 1000 calories, while feeling out-of-control. People with bulimia then purge in an attempt to \u201cget rid\u201d of the calories by inducing themselves to vomit, excessively exercising, or taking laxatives.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Substance use disorders<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Substance use disorder is also referred to as addiction. In Canada, around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ontario.cmha.ca\/addiction-and-substance-use-and-addiction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">six million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people will use substances during their lifetime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Substances include legal intoxicants like alcohol and prescription medication, as well as illegal drugs. The characteristics of abuse, like knowing how much is too much, vary depending on the substance.
