When you feel depressed, it can be hard to focus on anything else. Talking about such a personal experience with others can be intimidating. But you should know that there\u2019s nothing to be ashamed of if you\u2019re not feeling like yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.gov.on.ca\/en\/public\/publications\/mental\/depression.aspx#:~:text=Depressions%20are%20among%20the%20most,in%20his%20or%20her%20life.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One in four Canadians have had depression serious enough to need treatment at least once in their lives.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Depression, clinically known as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major depressive disorder,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a common mood disorder. It can cause you to feel sad for prolonged periods, or have a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loss of interest<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the things you usually enjoy. Depression is treatable, but it should still be taken seriously. Without treatment, symptoms of depression can get worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Sadness and depression are different<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression isn\u2019t the same as simply being sad. We all feel down from time to time. When we feel sad, it\u2019s often connected to something that\u2019s happened in our lives, like the death of a loved one. That sadness is very real, but it lessens over time. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clinical depression is an illness. Symptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like negative mood and hopelessness are long lasting when you\u2019re depressed. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feelings of depression<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aren\u2019t always attached to a life event. It\u2019s possible to feel depressed for no obvious reason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Depression symptoms<\/h2>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression symptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are wide-ranging. There are both emotional and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physical symptoms of depression.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Signs of m<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ajor depressive disorder (MDD)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling deeply sad or close to tears every day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased interest in your day-to-day activities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deriving no pleasure from things you usually enjoy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight loss or weight gain due to changes in your appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foggy or slowed thinking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling as if people don\u2019t like you<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling guilty<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty controlling emotions, leading to outbursts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia or trouble staying asleep<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleeping too much<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unexplained aches and pains<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digestive and bowel issues<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to act on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signs of depression early.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Getting proper treatment can help you get back to being yourself. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of depression fall under three categories: mild, moderate, and severe.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Mild depression<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with mild depression experience symptoms a few days a week. In some cases they return on and off for several years. The symptoms are bothersome, but they don\u2019t get in the way of your daily life. It\u2019s possible to go undiagnosed when you have mild depression because the symptoms mimic so many other illnesses. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/mind-and-mood\/the-no-drug-approach-to-mild-depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise, a consistent sleep schedule, and a nutritious diet are recommended to help improve your mood.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moderate depression<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For people with moderate depression, symptoms start to interfere with responsibilities at home, work, or in your social life. Medication and therapy are two common interventions. It\u2019s important to speak to a psychiatrist or family doctor about which medication is best for you. Avoid self-medicating through the use of drugs or alcohol. Doing so could make you feel worse in the long run.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe \u2014 major depression<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When someone has severe depression, they\u2019re unable to live a normal life because of their symptoms. All aspects of life are affected by the illness. People with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe depression<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are more likely to have thoughts about self-harm or suicide. If you or someone you know is feeling this way, it\u2019s an emergency. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crisisservicescanada.ca\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contact an emergency suicide phone line if you feel that anyone is in danger.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Depression warning signs<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthcommission.ca\/English\/what-we-do\/stigma-and-discrimination\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of stigma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, many people feel nervous to admit they&#8217;re depressed. Likewise, it\u2019s tough to bring it up when you start noticing a friend or family member acting out of character. If you\u2019re concerned that you or someone you know could be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suffering from depression, look for these<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">characteristics:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hopelessness<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re feeling hopeless, questions like \u201cWhat\u2019s the point?\u201d constantly run through your mind. You may also experience feelings of guilt that are out of proportion. It\u2019s important to remember that these feelings are a part of having depression, and are not based in reality. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/depression\/what-is-depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your feelings of hopelessness last for two weeks or more, it\u2019s a strong indication of depression.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restlessness<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restlessness is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptom of depression and anxiety<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> combined<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s not uncommon for people to be<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/320370#symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> living with both anxiety and depression at the same time.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This particular <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warning sign of depression<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is noticeable to the people around you. It involves actions such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wringing your hands<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pacing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impulsive behavior, like gambling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritability and anger<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble sitting still<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive talking<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fixating on death<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re living with depression, you\u2019re at a higher risk of attempting suicide. For friends and family of someone with depression, be aware that the following behaviours could be signs of suicidal thoughts:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saying goodbye to friends and family<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saying that others would be better off without them<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risky behaviour like reckless driving or unprotected sex<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudden calmness or improvement in mood after a period of feeling sad<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mood swings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Threatening to end their life<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making arrangements for a time when they\u2019re not around<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being withdrawn<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re finding yourself avoiding the company of others, it\u2019s possible you\u2019re becoming withdrawn. In everyday life this looks like frequently missing work or opting out of social occasions that were once enjoyable for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in appearance<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re living with depression, sometimes it\u2019s hard to motivate yourself to take care of your appearance. As a result, you might find yourself bathing less or looking disheveled.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How to find help<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes of depression<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are both genetic and environmental, which means there are solutions that start in both the body and the mind.
