But, they can also be a warning sign for the most dangerous type of skin cancer: melanoma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Risk factors for melanoma<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An estimated 7,800 Canadians are diagnosed with melanoma each year. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to see a dermatologist annually if you have risk factors for skin cancer. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5480135\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These risk factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age between 35-75<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Light skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blond or red hair<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family history of skin cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having severe sun damage in the past<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History of tanning bed use<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>When to see a doctor about a mole<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a suspicious mole pops up on your skin, you might be wondering whether it warrants an emergency trip to a dermatologist. While most moles are nothing to worry about, there are a few warning signs to watch out for. If your mole is showing any of the following traits, call a dermatologist or see one virtually.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Signs of melanoma<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a simple way to remember the main signs of melanoma. Dark moles, or moles with many colours, might be cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>D &#8211; Diameter: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pay attention to moles larger than six millimeters in diameter.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>E &#8211; Evolution:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A mole that suddenly appears, grows, or changes colour or shape should be investigated.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another sign to watch out for is how your mole feels. This means you should keep track of how many moles you have, and if any of them are changing in worrisome ways. That way you\u2019ll be able to tell if something is awry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to protect your skin year round to reduce your chances of developing a melanoma. Ultraviolet rays are the main environmental factor in skin cancer.
