A number of different factors can cause ED, including an underlying health condition, which makes addressing the issue with your healthcare provider a must.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you start to worry, know that ED doesn\u2019t automatically mean a scary, mystery diagnosis. Lifestyle choices like smoking, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol, or drug use<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can sometimes be at the root of it. Even seasonal changes can contribute, which means that winter can sometimes be the underlying cause of ED.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever the root cause, however, treatment is available. Here\u2019s the lowdown on erectile dysfunction and how winter plays into it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re not alone<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/conditions\/erectile-dysfunction-treatment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erectile dysfunction (ED)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is incredibly common. While a little less than half of men in their 40s report experiencing it under certain circumstances, that increases by about 10% a decade. Worse, the severity and frequency of these <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erectile issues<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increase along with age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common knowledge seems to dictate that drugs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/medications\/viagra\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viagra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getmaple.ca\/medications\/cialis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cialis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are your only option for ED. But, some find that although these drugs make it possible for them to have sex, they have a hard time enjoying it the way they used to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual issues<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are rarely talked about, however, many men struggle with the stigma that accompanies discussing their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This can keep them from broaching the subject, particularly where sexual and mental health meet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis shame and secrecy around an experience that is near-universal only serves to intensify the problem,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sexwithdrjess.com\/podcast-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jessica O\u2019Reilly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a noted sexologist and relationship expert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a problem that can put you at risk for depression and a variety of other issues, including self-confidence and relationship problems. Despite the silence, however, the vast majority of Canadian men are dealing with this issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe reality is that all men will lose an erection at an inopportune time at some point in their lives and it doesn\u2019t have to be the elephant in the room,\u201d continues O\u2019Reilly. After all, not talking about it does nothing to dispel these issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does my sex drive decrease in winter?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first thing to understand about ED is that it\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not your<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fault<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are a variety of physical and psychological conditions that make it a lot more likely to occur. Everything from the effects of many medications to the aging process can trigger <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erectile changes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 even winter\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cold weather <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can be a factor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hormone testosterone is crucial in sexual functioning. And, it just so happens that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testosterone levels<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9242810\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peak between August and October<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. From there, they start to slide, reaching their lowest point in March. As a result, many men <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experience erectile dysfunction at a higher frequency in the winter months<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, testosterone levels don\u2019t crater by themselves \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21154195\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low testosterone production<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is linked to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ow levels of vitamin D. Since sunlight provides vitamin D and winter ushers in shorter days, scientists attribute this decline in testosterone, at least in part, to a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lack of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adequate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sunlight<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin D isn\u2019t just linked to testosterone, it also encourages serotonin production. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, which means it passes messages from one nerve cell to another. In addition, it functions as a hormone, playing a role in erection and ejaculation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low levels of vitamin D and erectile dysfunction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> go together \u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D, it turns out, is necessary for maintaining <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7752519\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adequate erectile function<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0In fact, the lower your levels of vitamin D, the more likely <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you may be<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to experience <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erectile issues<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loss of erection<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">difficulty reaching an orgasm, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decrease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erection\u2019s firmness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does winter affect my penis?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decimating your vitamin D levels isn\u2019t the only effect <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winter<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has on your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">penis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You\u2019ve long known that your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">penis shrinks<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cold<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And, while <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">penis shrinkage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing, it\u2019s actually an adaptive behaviour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to the cold, your body constricts your blood vessels to stop your blood from flowing as freely. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">function of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vasoconstriction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is to conserve heat in the core of your body by keeping warm blood there. This protects your organs and reduces <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pumping into your penis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other limbs as robustly. Luckily, it\u2019s only temporary.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seasonal affective disorder and erectile dysfunction<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seasonal changes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aren\u2019t uncommon. Many people experience <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winter blues<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a period of low mood that comes with the shorter, darker days that winter brings. Scientists don\u2019t fully understand what triggers the condition, but it seems to be tied to a change in your exposure to sunlight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like other forms of depression, SAD may result in a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lack of energy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loss of pleasure <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in activities you formerly enjoyed. However, there are a lot of available options for an issue like ED and talking about it can lead to developing different strategies. Many men end up considering their difficulties maintaining an erection to be blessings because of the new things they try.
